Background

Mona grew up in a low-income home in a culturally diverse community of southern New Mexico. Through her childhood experiences Mona learned to acknowledge and appreciate the day-to-day challenges that resource-limited families face in providing for basic needs, and through this a seed was planted to make a difference, to ensure that those who are less fortunate are given the same care and opportunities as those living in better circumstances.

Mona’s nursing experience at the Mayo Clinic and University of New Mexico Children’s Hospital included care of diverse patient populations (pediatric to adult), one-on-one and group patient education, direct patient care in both inpatient and outpatient settings, and volunteer work for various clinics.

Mona decided to pursue a graduate degree as a Family Nurse Practitioner in order to have a larger impact on the community. She received her Master of Science in Nursing in 2013 and in March 2014 she completed her Doctor of Nursing Practice/Family Nurse Practitioner program (DNP/FNP) at the University of Washington along with the Global Health certificate for Women, Adolescent, and Child Health from University of Washington. Mona has had numerous opportunities to travel to and learn from various cultures in the global health setting which have provided her with a cross-cultural perspective on healthcare in developing countries and further reinforced her passion for global health and underserved communities.

Through her past experiences abroad and in the United States, Mona has come to realize that practitioners are most effective when they embrace the local culture and the people’s practices within. Both global and community health are about embracing a culture, forming partnerships, and working together to find sustainable interventions to improve the community’s health.

A Quote from Dr. Mona Wiggins

“As humans we are each designed with unique wants, desires, motivations. I’m ecstatic to be working for a company that acknowledges this and provides me with both the time and freedom to treat each of my patients in a specialized way!”
~Mona
